Laboratory safety training

A two-day course for people who work in laboratories, from quality control labs in food factories to analytical and research labs. It builds safety, health and environment (SHE) knowledge on top of delegates' technical skills, including training on the specific chemicals in your own lab. We present laboratory safety training at your lab in Cape Town.

Technical skill isn't the same as safe practice

Laboratory staff are usually well trained in methods and equipment. What's often missing is the safety side: recognising hazards in their own routine, understanding their legal responsibilities, and knowing exactly what to do when a spill, exposure or fire happens.

This course closes that gap. It focuses on identifying and controlling risks, and it includes a module on the chemicals your lab actually uses, so the training is about your bench rather than a textbook.

What delegates will be able to do

  • Explain their responsibilities under the OHS Act and the relevant regulations
  • Apply hazard identification and risk control principles in the lab
  • Follow safe workplace procedures for common laboratory tasks
  • Understand the basics of chemicals, their hazards and how to read safety information
  • Handle the specific chemicals used in your laboratory safely
  • Respond correctly to emergencies and take part in disaster planning

Course modules

  1. Responsibilities. Employer and employee duties, and what they mean in a lab.
  2. Hazard identification and risk control. Finding hazards in routine lab work and choosing controls.
  3. Workplace safety. Safe procedures, housekeeping, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  4. Basics of chemicals. Chemical hazards, labelling, safety data sheets and storage.
  5. Your chemicals. A module built around the chemicals used in your own laboratory.
  6. Emergency procedures and disaster management. Spills, exposures, fire and evacuation.

Who should attend

  • Laboratory technicians and analysts
  • Quality control and quality assurance staff who work in labs
  • Laboratory supervisors and managers
  • Health and safety representatives for laboratory areas

This course suits food and beverage manufacturers' quality labs particularly well, where food safety audits also look at chemical control.

What delegates get

A BMS Holdings certificate of attendance and course notes that include a summary of the hazards of your own chemicals.

Frequently asked questions

What makes this different from general chemical safety training?

This course is built for people who work in laboratories and includes a module on the specific chemicals your lab uses. General chemical training, such as our Hazardous Chemical Substances course, covers chemical storage and handling across a whole workplace.

Does the law require laboratory staff to be trained?

Yes. The OHS Act requires employers to train employees in the hazards of their work, and the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 specifically require information and training for employees exposed to hazardous chemicals. Lab staff usually fall into that group.

Can the course be run in our own laboratory?

Yes. Running it on site lets us walk through your lab, look at your storage and equipment, and use real examples from your daily work.
