HIRA training (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment)

Every safety system starts with one question: what could hurt someone here, and how badly? This two-day Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) course teaches your people to answer that question properly, and to lead a risk assessment team in your own workplace. We present HIRA training at your workplace in Cape Town.

Risk management is where safety starts

Risk management is the starting point for every safety programme, whether it's a basic legal compliance system or a full ISO 45001 management system. Without proper risk control in place, the chances of achieving compliance are slim.

The employer's duty under the OHS Act is clear: find out what the hazards are, measure the risk, and put controls in place for the significant risks. Section 8(2)(d) requires employers to establish the hazards attached to any work and the precautions needed. The Construction Regulations 2014 require a documented risk assessment on every construction project. A HIRA done by trained people is how you meet those duties and prove it.

What delegates will be able to do

The course gives delegates practical skills across the full range of risk assessments, and the tools to complete the method from start to finish. By the end, they can:

  • Use the core risk terms correctly (hazard, risk, likelihood, severity, control)
  • Explain where modern risk management came from and why it works
  • Apply HIRA in their own industry and workplace
  • Explain the legal requirements for risk assessment
  • Tell the difference between hazards, perils and risks
  • Use several hazard identification techniques
  • Rate risks and decide which controls are needed
  • Facilitate a risk assessment team in the workplace

What is a HIRA?

A HIRA, or Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, is a structured way to list the hazards in a task or area, rate how likely and how serious each one is, and decide which controls are needed. It's the foundation of OHS legal compliance and of management systems such as ISO 45001.

What is the difference between a HIRA and a baseline risk assessment?

A baseline risk assessment is the first broad assessment of a whole site or operation, and it sets your risk profile. A HIRA can be done at any level, for a specific task, area, process or change. This course teaches the method used for both, so delegates can take part in either.

Can we use this course to do our own risk assessments?

Yes. That's the aim. After the course, delegates can facilitate a risk assessment team in your workplace. For a complex site or a first baseline assessment, many clients combine the training with our risk assessment service, where a BMS consultant leads the first round and your team continues from there.
