Basic Fire Fighting training

A small fire put out in the first minute is an incident report. The same fire left for five minutes can close your business. This five-hour course gives your workforce the knowledge to prevent fires, and the confidence to pick up the right extinguisher and use it properly. We run this fire fighting training at your workplace in Cape Town.

Fire safety for the whole workforce

Basic Fire Fighting is designed for the general workforce as well as fire team members. It's short enough to run in half a day without stopping production. It's also practical enough that delegates leave having actually used an extinguisher, not just watched a slide about one.

The Environmental Regulations for Workplaces under the OHS Act require employers to take fire precautions, which include having suitable fire-fighting equipment and people who know how to use it. This course covers the people part.

What delegates will be able to do

The aim is simple: every delegate knows what to do when there's a fire. By the end of the course they understand:

  • How a fire starts and keeps burning (the fire triangle)
  • The classes of fire and why the class matters
  • The types of fire extinguisher and which one to use on which fire
  • How to operate a fire extinguisher safely
  • How to prevent fires in their own work area
  • What to do in a fire emergency and how it links to your emergency plan

Course modules

  1. Components of a fire and fire fighters
  2. Fire classifications
  3. Fire prevention
  4. Types of fire
  5. Emergency response plan: fire requirements
  6. Practical: using fire extinguishers on a controlled fire

Who should attend

Everyone benefits, but it's especially valuable for fire team members, supervisors, SHE representatives, security staff, contractors and employees who work in higher-risk areas such as kitchens, workshops, stores and production lines.

What delegates receive

Each delegate receives a certificate of completion for your training records.

How long is the Basic Fire Fighting course?

The course takes five hours, including a practical session where every delegate uses a fire extinguisher on a controlled fire. Most companies run it as a morning or afternoon session, so a shift can be trained without losing a full working day.

Is there a practical part?

Yes. The final module is practical. Each delegate puts out a controlled fire with an extinguisher, so they've used one before they ever need to in a real emergency.

What is the difference between Basic Fire Fighting and Fire Marshal training?

Basic Fire Fighting teaches employees to prevent and put out small fires. Fire Marshal training goes further, for the people who lead your fire team. It covers fire planning, general fire requirements for the site and coordinating the response. Many employers train everyone in Basic Fire Fighting and their marshals in both.
