Advanced Health and Safety Representative training

A good SHE representative does more than walk around with a checklist. This two-day course turns representatives into active risk controllers who can assess hazards, investigate incidents and communicate with management. It includes a full practical component on your own site. We present this advanced SHE representative training at workplaces in Cape Town.

Who should attendHealth and safety representatives and committee members, especially experienced reps

When competence is non-negotiable

If your business is building a system that meets both local law and international standards such as ISO 45001, competent representatives are non-negotiable. They support the health and safety committee in meeting the goals of your OHS management system and the OHS Act. Alongside supervisors and committee members, they form a strong defence against injuries and losses.

The course adds practical work on the thinking skills that let representatives spot and control risks on their own initiative. It goes well beyond the basics covered in the one-day course.

What delegates will be able to do

After two days, representatives can define safety practices, apply the legal requirements and perform their duties to a high standard. They'll have the processes and techniques to evaluate safety standards and act proactively to put controls in place.

  • Explain the legal requirements for representatives and committees
  • Describe the duties of the employer and of employees under the OHS Act
  • Explain how the representative and the committee function together
  • Apply core health and safety principles in their area
  • Identify hazards and help carry out a risk assessment
  • Understand the basics of occupational health
  • Plan and carry out a workplace inspection
  • Communicate findings to management and fellow employees
  • Take part in an incident investigation

What does the practical component involve?

Delegates apply what they've learned in your own workplace. They carry out an inspection, identify hazards and help rate the risks, under the trainer's guidance. They then discuss their findings as a group, so they leave with real experience instead of theory alone.

Do representatives need the 1-day course first?

No. The advanced course covers everything in the one-day course and adds risk assessment, communication and a practical. New representatives can go straight onto the advanced course, especially in higher-risk workplaces.

Does this course help with ISO 45001?

Yes. ISO 45001 expects workers to take part in hazard identification, risk assessment and incident investigation. Representatives trained on this course can do that properly, which supports your ISO 45001 implementation and gives auditors evidence of worker participation.
