Emergency plans only work if people know them

Being prepared for an emergency is part of preventing loss. An emergency response plan only works when the people it relies on are familiar with it and trained in their role. Otherwise it's a document in a file.

This course gives employees the techniques to take part in developing and putting your emergency response plan into practice. That covers fires, gas leaks, bomb threats, floods and any other event that means getting people out of a building quickly and safely.

What delegates will be able to do

Planning for emergencies and anticipating disasters is an essential part of any health, safety and environmental management system. The aim of the course is to help the business manage an unwanted event effectively, and to keep losses to a minimum during it. By the end of the course, delegates can:

  • Identify the hazards and risks that could lead to an emergency
  • Help develop a physical emergency plan for the site
  • State the objective of the plan
  • Identify and appoint the people responsible for each role
  • Set up communication requirements during an emergency
  • Work out the resources and equipment needed
  • Develop evacuation procedures and roll calls
  • Identify the training other employees need

Evacuation Marshal questions

Can't see yours? Call us on 064 549 5312.

What is the difference between an evacuation marshal and a fire marshal?

An evacuation marshal is responsible for getting people out of the building safely and accounted for. A fire marshal focuses on preventing fires and tackling them in the early stages. In smaller workplaces one person often does both, so many companies send the same people on both courses.

Do we need an emergency plan before the training?

No, but it helps. If you already have a plan, we use it during the course so marshals learn their actual routes and assembly points. If you don't, delegates learn how a plan is built, and our emergency preparedness service can write one for your site.

How often should we run evacuation drills?

Often enough that everyone knows the routes and the marshals know their roles. The right frequency depends on your site, your shifts and any requirements in your emergency plan, management system or municipal by-laws. Our emergency preparedness service sets a drill schedule with you and reviews each drill afterwards.
