Fire Marshal training

Your fire marshals are the people everyone looks to when the alarm goes off. This one-day course gives them more than extinguisher skills. They learn to spot fire risks before they become fires, check that your site meets its fire requirements, and lead the response when it counts. We run fire marshal training at your workplace in Cape Town.

A fire team that prevents, not just reacts

Fire Marshal training is designed for fire marshals and fire team members. Where Basic Fire Fighting teaches employees to handle a small fire, this course prepares marshals to take responsibility for fire safety in their area every day of the year.

That means knowing where fires are likely to start, what equipment and signage the area should have, and how the fire team fits into your wider emergency plan. The course ends with a practical session, so marshals have used the equipment themselves.

What delegates will be able to do

The course gives fire team members the knowledge to identify fire sources, establish fire requirements, prevent fires and deal with fires effectively in an emergency. By the end, delegates understand:

  • The fire triangle and how fires spread
  • The classes of fire and the matching types of extinguisher
  • How to operate fire extinguishers safely
  • The safety measures and fire precautions a workplace needs
  • Industrial fire requirements, such as equipment, access and escape routes
  • How to plan for and respond to a fire emergency

Course modules

  1. Components of a fire and fire fighters
  2. Fire classes
  3. Fire prevention

Fire Marshal questions

What does a fire marshal do?

A fire marshal helps prevent fires in their area and leads the first response when one breaks out. Day to day, that means checking extinguishers, escape routes and housekeeping. In an emergency it means raising the alarm, tackling small fires safely and supporting the evacuation. The exact duties should be written into the marshal's appointment and your emergency plan.

How many fire marshals do we need?

There is no single number for every workplace. It depends on your floor area, the number of people, the fire risk and how many shifts you run. Your fire risk assessment and emergency plan should set the number. We can help you work it out as part of our emergency preparedness service.

Should fire marshals also do Basic Fire Fighting?

It helps, but it isn't essential. Fire Marshal training already includes fire classes, extinguisher types and a practical session. Many employers train all staff in Basic Fire Fighting and then send their marshals on this course for the planning and leadership side.
