Compliance starts with understanding

A company's ability to comply depends on its responsible and accountable people clearly understanding what the legal duties of the company and of individuals are. Without that understanding, effort and money go to the wrong places, and the gaps that cause losses stay open.

This course explains what the lawmakers intended. More importantly, it gives delegates the competence to make sure the employer's duties are carried out in line with the OHS Act, from the general duties in section 8 to the regulations covering machinery, electrical equipment and occupational health.

What delegates will be able to do

Each module builds a specific competence. By the end of the day, delegates can define and show their understanding of:

  • The South African legal system and where the OHS Act fits
  • The key terms used in the Act
  • The sections of the Act that apply to their workplace
  • The duties of employers and of employees
  • What the general regulations require
  • Machinery safety requirements
  • Portable electrical equipment and the Act
  • The employer's responsibilities for occupational health

What is the OHS Act?

The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 is South Africa's main law on workplace health and safety. It places duties on employers to provide a safe workplace, and on employees to work safely. It's supported by regulations covering specific topics such as first aid, machinery, electrical installations, hazardous substances and construction.

What is the difference between this course and the 5-day OHS Act course?

This one-day course is a practical overview for managers, supervisors and committee members. The 5-day OHS Act course is an in-depth programme for safety officers, who need to apply the Act and its regulations in detail every day.

Who needs OHS Act training?

There's no single "OHS Act certificate" the law requires everyone to hold. But managers, supervisors and representatives can only carry out their duties if they understand the Act. This course is the most efficient way to give them that understanding, and to have evidence of it in your training records.
