A badly stacked store is a hazard waiting to fall

Overloaded racking, unstable stacks, blocked aisles and chemicals stored next to the wrong materials can turn a store into one of the most dangerous areas on site. These risks build up slowly, often because space is tight and stock keeps arriving.

Many businesses also need to stack beyond the standard legal limits. That can be allowed, but only with an exemption from the Department of Employment and Labour, and an application without sound practices in place is likely to be refused. This course gives your team the principles and controls behind safe stacking, so your storage areas hold up to an inspection.

What delegates will be able to do

  • Explain the legal requirements for stacking and storage
  • Apply the principles of safe stacking to different materials and stack types
  • Manage a storage facility safely: layout, aisles, racking and inspections
  • Store and handle hazardous chemical substances correctly
  • Support management with safety in the business's stacking and storage practices

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't see yours? Call us on 064 549 5312.

Is there a legal limit on how high we can stack?

Yes, the General Safety Regulations set requirements for safe stacking, and stacking beyond the standard limits needs an exemption from the Department of Employment and Labour. The course explains the rules and what a successful exemption application needs to show.

Does this course cover forklift operation?

No. This course covers how materials are stacked and stored, not how to drive a forklift. Forklift operators need a separate operator training course.

Is the course useful outside warehouses?

Yes. Any workplace with a store room, stock area or yard where materials are stacked can benefit, including factories, retail back-of-house and workshops.
