Contractor management training
Most businesses now contract out maintenance, cleaning, security and project work. This one-day course teaches the people who manage those contractors how to vet them, approve them and keep their work safe while they're on your premises. We run this contractor management training on site for businesses in Cape Town.

Download course outline (PDF)Their incident can become your liability
When a contractor works on your site, the risk doesn't leave with the work. If a contractor is injured, or injures one of your employees, the first questions will be about what you checked before they started and how you controlled them while they worked.
Without a proper contractor management process, a business takes on legal and financial risk it can't see. This course gives your appointed contractor managers a practical system to approve the right contractors, set clear rules, and monitor work from the gate to sign-off.
What delegates will be able to do
- Explain the employer's legal liability towards contractors working on its premises
- Identify the compliance documents and competencies to ask a contractor for
- Run a contractor approval and vetting process
- Control site access and safety while contractors are working
- Support the SHEQ manager in co-ordinating contractor work across the business
Course modules

The law behind the courseThe Acts and regulations behind this service
| Law | Section | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 | Section 8 | The employer must provide a safe working environment, which includes controlling work done on its premises |
| Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 | Section 37(2) | A written agreement with a mandatory (contractor) sets out arrangements for health and safety, and affects the employer's liability for the contractor's acts or omissions |
| Construction Regulations 2014 | Regulation 5 and 7 | Duties of clients and contractors when contracted work is construction work |
What is a section 37(2) agreement?
A section 37(2) agreement is a written agreement between an employer and a contractor (a "mandatory" in the OHS Act) setting out how health and safety will be managed during the contracted work. It is one of the key documents an employer should have in place, and the course explains how it works and what it does and doesn't protect you from.
Do we need contractor management if we only use contractors occasionally?
Yes. The employer's duty to keep the workplace safe applies every time contractors work on your premises, whether that's daily or once a year. A simple approval process scaled to the risk of the work is enough for most occasional contractors.
Can BMS also check our contractors for us?
To manage contractor documents day to day, SHEQ24, a BMS Holdings company, has a contractor portal where contractors upload their safety files, competencies and Letters of Good Standing for vetting before they get site access.
